Perfect-bound booklets typically start at around 28 to 40 pages, depending on paper thickness, so the spine can hold. Wire-bound booklets can be any even number of pages. Which booklet binding should I choose?

Saddle stitching is the most popular and affordable option for slimmer booklets like programs, newsletters and guides. Perfect binding gives a square, book-like spine for thicker documents such as catalogues, manuals and annual reports. Wire binding lets your booklet lie completely flat, which is ideal for workbooks and recipe books. The right choice usually comes down to page count and paper thickness, so here are the numbers. How many pages can a booklet have?

Each binding has a minimum and maximum page count, and both shift with the thickness of the paper. Thicker (bulkier) paper takes up more room in the spine, so it lowers the maximum for saddle stitching and lowers the minimum for perfect binding. Thinner paper does the opposite.

Saddle stitch (stapled)

  • Starts at 8 pages, and the total must be a multiple of four (8, 12, 16, 20 and so on), including the cover.
  • On lighter text-weight paper (roughly 75 to 105gsm), booklets of up to about 64 pages are generally fine.
  • On heavier text paper (up to about 150gsm), around 40 pages or fewer lie flat without the spine bubbling open.
  • A thick stack of folded sheets strains the staples and won’t close neatly, so heavy stock lowers the limit. Uncoated stocks are also bulkier than coated stocks of the same weight.
  • Booklets over about 40 pages are affected by creep, where inner pages push out further and lose more at the trim. Keep text well inside the margins.

Perfect bound (glued spine)

  • Needs enough pages for the spine to hold the glue, typically from around 28 to 40 pages depending on the thickness of the paper.
  • Page counts are in even numbers, and it can handle 200 pages and beyond.
  • Spine width is the number of sheets (pages divided by two) multiplied by the thickness of one sheet, plus the cover, so heavier paper gives a wider spine with fewer pages.
  • A printed spine lets you add the title and year, which suits reports and manuals.

Wire bound

  • Starts at 8 pages and doesn’t need to be a multiple of four, just an even number.
  • Pages are bound individually, so thick paper isn’t a problem, and the booklet lies completely flat.

These are typical industry limits. The exact numbers depend on the paper, so tell us your page count and stock and we’ll confirm the best binding for your project.

Turnaround and delivery

Most booklets are printed within 3 to 5 business days. Please allow at least 7 business days for printing and delivery if you have a fixed deadline. We print from five hubs around Australia and deliver free to any address except PO boxes. Rural and remote areas may take a little longer.

Getting your artwork ready

Send a press-ready PDF in CMYK with trim marks and 5mm bleed. 5mm is ideal for booklets, and 3mm is the minimum we can accept. Export as single pages, not spreads, with the front cover first and back cover last. We check every file before it goes to print. If yours needs work, add our Fix my artwork service.
